Macheso grooming younger brother

The Sunday Mail

IS it genetic, or it is acquired?

The phenomenon is spread the world-over but within our borders we have the Tukus, Chimbetus and Manatsas, among others. And the culture of "music families" continues to be fashionable and the latest on the local line-up could be the Machesos.

Alick is grooming his young brother, John, to follow his footsteps. John Macheso was seen on stage rounding off his brother’s recent show in the capital.

John fronts a group that is made up of the less active youthful members of Orchestra Mberikwazvo. Among them are dancers Darlington Matoki and White Mubako while backing vocalists Elton Muropa and Franco "Slomo" Daka also make it on the youthful outfit. To a regular at Orchestra Mberikwazvo shows, it looked weird to see the dancers playing guitars. Just like his brother John plays the bass guitar and does lead vocals.

And the young man believes he can emulate his brother.

"I have been working with the group in the administration department, but I have not joined them on stage. My brother advised me to start my own things and it came as a good idea because most of the youngsters in his band were learning to play guitars.

"We have our own sessions and I believe with time, we will be able to stand our own. At the moment we will provide supporting acts to the senior Orchestra Mberikwazvo team whenever our services are needed," explained John.

He added that he had already written some songs and would go into the studio when the right time comes. He applauded his brother for ushering him into music.

Alick was glad his young brother was growing into a promising musician.

"He started from scratch and we have been working together off the stage. He is a promising youngster and given the platform, he can do better. I am glad to have someone from my family follow my footsteps. My son Esau is also learning the guitar but he is still young to consider taking the art professionally," added Alick.
